Seabed sediments (grain size), detailed
The data set shows the grain size composition in the upper part of the seabed sediments (upper 0-50 cm of the seabed). The attribute table for the data set provides information on the different grain size classes and which term is used based on the content of different fractions in sediments. By applying different symbologies designed to show the content of individual particle size fractions, the dataset can be displayed as a series of more specialized maps, e.g. Sediment mud content or Dominant grain size.

Map showing sediments classified by grain size gives a good overview of the depositional environment and the nature of the seabed. By grouping grain size classes in a geologically reasonable way, the dataset can be visualized as other thematic maps, such as Sedimentation areas (areas where fine-grained sediments are deposited), and Diggability (sediments grouped and presented according to how easy it is to dig in the bottom).

The data set covers only certain areas in Norwegian fjords and seas near the coast, where various mapping projects have provided detailed information about the seabed. The data set contains areas that have been mapped at different levels of detail. The basiss for interpretation of this dataset is detailed digital bathymetry data, full-coverage accoustic reflectivity data and shallow seismic, as well as underwater photos and videos and sediment samples of the seabed. There are several ready-made symbolization files in Digital Cartography, which can be used to display grain size data as more specialized maps.

The dataset has been interpreted and digitized by NGU. The source data for interpretations is data from the Norwegian Geological Survey (NGU), the Norwegian Mapping Authority (SKS), the Institute of Marine Research (HI), the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI). Grain size data is based on interpretation of video of the seabed, interpretation of digital reflectivity data, as well as interpretation of analogue and digital seismic data. Acoustic data and video are verified with analyses of sediment samples. Detailed bathymetry data has been included to support the interpretation. Seabed sediments (grain size) has been digitized and prepared using ArcGIS tools. The methodology is described in the ‘Målemetode’ and ‘Geopåvisningtype’ fields.
