Seabed sediments (grain size), overview

This dataset contains the grain size composition of seabed sediments upper part. In the attribute table of the data set, information is given about the different grain size classes based on the content of different fractions in sediments. By applying different symbologies designed to show the content of individual particle size fractions, the dataset can be displayed as a series of more specialized maps, e.g. Sediment mud content or Dominant grain size.

Supplemental Information

The data set is composed of data from several mapping projects, where different seabed mapping and data interpretation methods have been used. Grain size data are based on analyzes of seabed samples, analysis and interpretation of digital reflectivity data and interpretation of analog and digital seismic data. There are several ready-made symbolization files in Digital Cartography, which can be used to display grain size data as more specialized maps.

Statement

The data set has been interpreted and digitized by NGU, but the basis for interpretations is data from the Norwegian Geological Survey (NGU), the Norwegian Mapping Authority (SKS), IBCAO, OLEX, the Institute for Continental Shelf Surveys (IKU) and JCS "SEVMORGEO". Grain size data on this scale are mainly based on analyzes of sediment samples from the seabed and interpretation of analogue and digital seismic data. Seabed sediments (grain size), overview has been digitized and prepared using ArcGIS tools. The methodology is described in the ‘Målemetode’ and ‘Geopåvisningtype’ fields.
